This portfolio is built up of both proprietary and third-party technology. In many cases a combination of different technologies is researched to combine strengths. For example: Kinetic energy storage can be used in combination with batteries. The kinetic storage will take on high-frequency/high-power fluctuations, allowing the battery to be used within a narrower bandwidth, thus prolonging its lifetime.

Kinetic storage (flywheels)
Kinetic systems store converted electricity as rotational energy using a flywheel, which can be slowed down to convert energy back into electricity. One of the key advantages of kinetic systems is that energy is instantly available with a high amount of power. Our proprietary KINEXT storage units take the concept to a new level. They offer an exceptionally fast response time and combine a very high power-to-energy ratio with a large energy capacity per single unit.

Chemical storage (batteries)
Chemical storage encompasses the use of various devices which convert chemical energy into electricity, including secondary (rechargeable) batteries and different types of fuel cells. At S4 Energy, we closely monitor the rapid developments in battery technology and work with specialist partners to develop set-ups in which the potential of batteries and fuel cells is maximized.

Electrolytic storage (capacitors)
Devices such as the capacitor and (double-layer) supercapacitor store energy in an electric field. Capacitors are typically used as short-term backup power, while supercapacitors can be used to power large engines.

Power conversion systems
Power conversion systems (PCS) are an essential part of every energy storage system. A PCS acts as an interface and ‘gatekeeper’ for all components and possible grid connections. We employ high-quality PCSs to ensure stable, efficient and reliable solutions.
