ROTTERDAM, Netherlands – 4 February 2025 – S4 Energy, Rotterdam-based leader in European grid-scale storage, has operationalized its state-of-the-art 4-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), the first of its kind in the Netherlands. Located in the Rilland municipality in the province of Zeeland, the project offers a 4-hour 10MW charge and discharge capacity. Its ability to efficiently store energy for an extended period combined with rapid, on-demand response enables it to provide several essential services to the grid and eventually, the end-consumers. The BESS also supports energy transition, by enabling integration of intermittent renewables while maintaining grid stability and reliability, which in turn helps lower electricity costs for the consumers.

This installation represents a significant milestone in enhancing grid flexibility and advancing integration of renewable energy, Mr. Dominique Becker Hoff, CCO of S4 Energy, explains: “It is no secret that the Dutch electricity grid is under strain. The demand for electricity is growing faster than infrastructure can be expanded. There is a mismatch between the timing of demand and the availability of sustainably generated energy. Both issues are expected to persist for the foreseeable future. We know that storage solutions are essential to keep the grid stable and energy affordable.

S4 Energy storage installations create energy buffers in high- and medium-voltage networks, efficiently harvesting surplus energy during overcapacity periods and releasing it when demand surges. This capability not only ensures cost-effective energy distribution but also facilitates the seamless integration of renewable energy into the grid. “The Rilland installation is the first of its kind in the Netherlands with the storage capacity to deliver 10MW of power for 4 consecutive hours. While this alone cannot meet the total energy demand, it represents a critical and scalable step forward in sustainable energy storage innovation and grid flexibility,” Becker Hoff explains.

In the coming years, S4 Energy plans to develop and build multiple new energy storage installations across Europe, emphasizing its commitment to a resilient, stable and affordable energy grid.
